Asian meetup Sydney: how to actually get in
Sydney runs the tightest door of any Lounge Asia city. No walk-ins, one ticket per person, and the waitlist does not get you inside. None of that is meant to be unfriendly — the room at Harts Pub only holds so many people. Read this once and you will not be the person turned away on the corner.
The four door rules
Every one of these exists because something went wrong on a previous Saturday. They are worth two minutes of your attention.
1. A ticket is required. There are no walk-ins.
Book on Meetup before you leave home. Hosts work from the confirmation list and cannot add names at the entrance, no matter how quiet it looks from outside.
2. The waitlist is not a ticket.
If you are waitlisted you cannot come in. Meetup promotes people automatically when spots free up, so open your booking again before you travel. A waitlisted screen at the door means a wasted trip into the city.
3. One ticket per person.
You cannot book two spots and bring a friend on your booking. Your friend needs their own Meetup account and their own ticket. This one catches out couples fairly often.
4. Entry is still subject to host approval.
A ticket is not an absolute guarantee. If entry is refused, you get a full refund — message Michael, the main organiser, rather than the local hosts, who do not handle refunds.
Finding Harts Pub
Harts Pub is on the corner of Essex Street and Gloucester Street, in The Rocks. It is a short walk from the water: about five minutes from Circular Quay Station, eight from Wynyard.
The Rocks is the oldest part of Sydney and the streets do not behave like a grid. Lanes bend, staircases cut between levels, and your phone will happily send you around the long way. Give yourself an extra five minutes the first time and follow the street names rather than the blue dot.
One quiet advantage of the location: you are finishing at 9:00 pm in the middle of Sydney's most walkable district, a few minutes from the ferries and trains at Circular Quay. Getting home is easy, which is not true of every Saturday night out in this city.

Have your Meetup confirmation already open on your phone, along with a government photo ID. Chris and Kev run the door, and it moves in seconds when your screen is up before you reach them.
Once you are inside
If you spot an empty seat, take it. Standing groups use far more floor than seated ones, and in a room this size that is the difference between comfortable and packed.
What the Saturday crowd is like
Sydney runs every second Saturday from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm, and recent nights have had around forty people through the door. That is a good size — large enough that you can move on from a conversation without it being obvious, small enough that you will actually recognise faces next fortnight.
Chris hosts here. He is half Japanese Australian, grew up in Sydney, and has worked in consulting for several years, so he knows exactly what it is like to sit between two cultures and be asked to pick one. If you are mixed heritage and unsure whether you belong in an Asian social group, he is a good person to say hello to first.
The Saturday timing pulls a different crowd from a weeknight. People are not coming straight from the office, so nobody is checking the clock at eight, and it is easy to carry on somewhere else afterwards if the group feels like it.
The one rule the hosts will not bend on: this is not a pickup night. Persistent attention after someone has made it clear they are not interested gets you removed immediately. That policy is why so many people are willing to walk in alone.
Sydney door questions
Can I just turn up on the night in Sydney?
No. Sydney does not accept walk-ins. You need a ticket booked on Meetup before you arrive, and the hosts check the confirmation list at the door. This is stricter than our other cities because the room at Harts Pub has a fixed capacity.
I am on the waitlist. Can I come anyway?
No. Waitlisted guests cannot enter. If a spot opens up, Meetup moves you off the waitlist automatically and you will get a confirmation, so check your booking before you leave home.
Does a ticket guarantee I get in?
Entry is still subject to host approval on the night. If entry is refused you receive a full refund, arranged by Michael, the main Lounge Asia organiser. Local hosts do not handle refunds.
How do I find Harts Pub?
