A LITTLE HELP WITH YOUR NEXT HELLO

New city.
Small beginnings.

Practical ideas for your first meetup, meeting people in a new city, and feeling comfortable across languages.

A conversation around the table at a Lounge Asia gathering
One conversation is a lovely place to start.

01 / YOUR NEXT HELLO

Your first meetup, without the mystery.

You don’t need a plus-one, a perfect introduction, or a big personality. Give yourself one simple goal: meet one new person.

Before you go

Choose your city and check the current event listing. Read the local time, venue, price, and age requirements, then RSVP. Bring a valid photo ID if the gathering is at a bar or pub.

When you arrive

Find the host and say, “Hi, it’s my first time.” Ask how the gathering works. A host introduction can make the first conversation feel a little easier.

Your first conversation

Try “How long have you been in the city?” or “What have you enjoyed here so far?” Listen, ask a follow-up, and let the conversation take its own direction.

02 / YOUR NEXT HELLO

Making friends takes a few hellos.

A new friendship rarely arrives fully formed. A few small, repeated conversations can turn an unfamiliar room into a familiar place.

Make a little room for it

Choose an activity or gathering you’re curious about. Give yourself permission to try it without having to meet everyone or stay for the whole evening.

Look for common ground

Food, hobbies, work, study, or the experience of moving somewhere new can open up a conversation. You don’t have to share the same background to connect.

Keep in touch, without pressure

If you both enjoyed talking, ask whether they’d like to keep in touch. Respect a no or a change of subject. A coffee or another group gathering can be an easy next step.

03 / YOUR NEXT HELLO

Connection doesn’t need perfect English.

Lounge Asia is a social gathering, not a language test. Speak at your own pace and use the languages you feel comfortable with.

Start small

A simple hello is enough to begin. Short questions, a little patience, and a sense of humour help a conversation along.

Share the conversation

Ask what languages someone enjoys speaking. Be curious without assuming their nationality, background, or language from how they look.

Make room for everyone

If a conversation changes language, help include the people around you. Explain a phrase or invite someone into the discussion. The goal is to connect.
