Brisbane is where Lounge Asia started, and the host team is local: Naoki, Anna, Yuka and Koki, alongside Michael who founded the community.
Several of them arrived in Brisbane from Japan themselves. Yuka and Koki are here on working holidays; Anna moved from Japan too; Naoki runs a business in education and study abroad. None of that is decoration — it means the people greeting you at the door have personally done the thing you are about to do, which is walk into a room of strangers in a language you are still working on.
Practically, that shows up as being walked over and introduced rather than left to hover near the bar. If you would rather ease in, say so when you arrive and someone will keep an eye out for you.
One rule they hold firmly: this is not a pickup night. Continued attention after someone has signalled they are not interested gets you removed on the spot, and that policy is precisely why so many people are willing to come on their own.
